Signs of A Faulty Heat Pump Compressor in Lusby, MD

January 25, 2023

Heat pumps in Lusby, MD sometimes fail because of a faulty heat pump compressor. It is a critical component. But how do you troubleshoot a compressor? There are four major signs of a faulty compressor that you should know.

1. Loud Noises

Apart from the whirling of the fan, heat pumps don’t have many other noises. If you notice clattering or screeching, it means the compressor has an issue. It could be low refrigerant or simply a loose part.

Vibrations also indicate that the system is overworking to attain the desired temperature. This cannot go away on its own. Contact one of our technicians to repair the compressor.

2. Restricted Airflow

When the refrigerant is improperly regulated, the refrigerant coils and lines tend to freeze. The extra layer on coils restricts the free movement of air. This is often the reason why you notice less air from the vents.

Leaks can also pose the same challenge. If the refrigerant level runs extremely low, then the compressor strains its cooling or heating function. You will notice less air than usual from your heat pump.

3. Takes Too Long to Start

A faulty compressor creates electrical resistance that increases electrical draw. Such an effect triggers the breaker to trip as a self-preservation mechanism. This prevents damage to your system.

If you notice lagging, then it means there is an issue with the compressor. In case the compressor breakers burn out, the system will fail to start.

4. Overheating

If your heat pump overheats, it should automatically shut down. There could be a number of issues causing this, so an immediate call to a technician should be your first step.
